3 Ways College Students Can Boost Their Resumes and Their Bank Account

Free time in college is a rare thing these days, and not just because students are hitting the books harder than usual. It’s because college is expensive, and many students need part-time jobs to offset living expenses. If you’ve decided to join the workforce while in college, Mindful Way Coaching offers three ways you can earn some extra cash.

Work for Yourself

What could be a better resume builder than running your own business? More importantly, what could be better than being your own boss? When you work for yourself, you get to set your own hours and only take on projects that you want. There can be freedom and success for college students who have (or want to develop) a strong business mind.

E-commerce is a great business for college students, especially those who follow the dropship model. Since you don’t have to keep a physical inventory with dropshipping, this kind of business fits right in a dorm room. Getting started in e-commerce can be a bit cumbersome, but there are online resources that can guide you through the process.

If e-commerce sounds too complicated this semester, you can always dip your toe in the water of entrepreneurship by marketing yourself as a nanny, pet sitter, dog walker, personal shopper, Uber or Lyft driver, tutor, or offer your skills up as a freelancer. For example, if you’re studying graphic design, website design, or photography, you can work freelance jobs for cash and resume-building projects.

You should start any venture properly by choosing a business structure and registering with your state. Many young solopreneurs aim for an LLC since it can flex if your business grows. Plus, it affords certain tax perks and protects personal assets. You can start your LLC Illinois quickly and inexpensively through an online service. Once completed, you’re ready to start wooing customers.

Work off Campus

The mall, big box stores, clothing stores, restaurants, movie theatres, video game stores — getting an off-campus job can be exciting. You’ll be able to make friends outside the classroom, build networks for references, and learn how to deal with business in the real world.

Some of the best off-campus jobs for your resume are paid internships. This means that the work you did in some way relates to your major. For example, people studying accounting can get an internship in the finance, payroll, or business department of major corporations, professional sporting teams, and hospitals. If you’re studying digital media, there are often internships in areas like web content development, social media coordinator, or marketing intern.

Work on Campus

Getting a campus job means you don’t have to waste time on your commute, especially if you live on campus. It also means you can study during downtime, which encourages you to keep school as your main focus. While campus jobs run the gamut from taking tickets at sporting events to shelving books in the library, you can often find something that relates to your major, which can make you look pretty appealing post-graduation.

Campus jobs can be a fun way to make money and friends. Students can work in the gym, like administrative assistants, in restaurants and stores, in the library, as teaching assistants, in the writing or math assistance center, as an assistant in the business office — just to name a few. The competition may be tougher for an on-campus job; you won’t be the only college student applying. So, if you want your application to stand out, you’re going to need to write a top-notch resume. Most college students are new to the world of resumes, so take this opportunity to become familiar with online resume templates and cover letter builders. These resources can help you create professional-grade resumes that help you stand out.

Reports show that roughly 40 percent of college students work more than 30 hours a week. If scoring the ideal part-time job is your goal, consider checking out e-commerce, sprucing up your resume, or filling out applications at the mall. Whatever you choose, having work experience before graduation is a guaranteed way to stand out when the time comes to launch your post-graduation career.

Entering the workforce is both exhilarating and anxiety-inducing. To help you with your anxiety and so you can approach your professional life mindfully, consider working with Mindful Way Coaching as you transition into this new chapter.
